Here's a new trend to learn for your next cocktail party: Bookshelf wealth. Bookshelf wealth — an interior design trend profiled in House Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens, and now The New York Times — rejects a perfectly staged, hyper-curated room in favor of a look that's a little more messy and quirky. Advertisement"What separates this from other interior design styles is that these homes look cozy and lived in," says interior design creator Kailee Blalock in a TikTok video posted by @houseofhive. A particular interior design aesthetic that can only be achieved through not trying too hard and displaying items that are meaningful might sound a bit oxymoronic. Advertisement"Bookshelf wealth might be the saddest, most pathetic trend I have ever heard of," Interior design creator Marissa Warner said in a TikTok post on her account, @TheHomeNarrative.

New York CNN —BuzzFeed, Lyft, Whole Foods and Deloitte all recently announced layoffs affecting thousands of US workers. With 11,000 job cuts announced in November and the 10,000 announced in March, Meta’s headcount will fall to around 66,000 — a total reduction of about 25%. The company announced in January that it was eliminating some 18,000 positions as part of a major cost-cutting bid at the e-commerce giant. IndeedJob listing website Indeed.com announced cuts of approximately 2,200 employees, representing almost 15% of its total workforce, the company said in March. The cuts come after the company announced several rounds of job cuts throughout the pandemic due to falling demand, followed by rapid hiring last year.
There had been conflicting signals over the likely timing of the presidential and parliamentary elections since last month's earthquake, with some suggesting they could be postponed until later in the year or could be held as scheduled on June 18. Erdogan has faced a wave of criticism over his government's handling of the deadliest quake in the nation's modern history. Now he also must contend with criticism over the response to the quake in a region that traditionally backed him. The quake also injured 108,000 people in Turkey. Some two million people were registered as having fled the region, which has been hit by more than 11,000 aftershocks, AFAD said.
It’s the latest example in a brutal wave of layoffs that have consumed the media and technology industries. In making the job cuts at Dotdash Meredith, which will impact 274 employees, CEO Neil Vogel cited the poor economic terrain the company is trying to navigate. In recent months, the media and technology sectors have taken a battering as advertisers tighten spending amid economic uncertainty. CNN, NBC News, MSNBC, Vox Media, The Washington Post, BuzzFeed, Gannett and other news organizations have cut their workforces in recent months. Google said it had made the decision to eliminate 6% of its workforce, which translates to approximately 12,000 jobs.
A lavender and chamomile-scented aromatherapy spray contaminated with deadly bacteria that killed two people has also killed one of the victim's pet raccoon, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The spray was linked to a multistate outbreak that killed a 5-year-old boy in Georgia and a 53-year-old woman in Kansas. The aromatherapy spray was also the source of the illness of a 53-year-old man in Minnesota and a 4-year-old girl in Texas. According to the CDC, the Texas patient's previously healthy pet raccoon broke a bottle of the spray and walked through the liquid. The bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei are rarely found in the United States and are generally found in contaminated soil or water in parts of South and Southeast Asia.
Americans were asked if they think life will be better for the next generation, and most don't think so. How likely do you think it is that today's youth will have a better life than their parents--very likely, somewhat likely, somewhat unlikely, or very unlikely?" Just 13% said it was very likely, and 29% said it was somewhat likely. Republicans drove the drop in optimism, with just a third saying that they think the next generation will fare better. But Democrats — the majority of whom do think things will get better — still saw their optimism at its lowest-ever.
The growth of ad-supported streaming at scale is set to challenge the $60 billion TV ad business. One top internet executive, IAC CEO Joey Levin, says Netflix will destroy networks' scarcity argument. Wall Street also is waiting to see if Netflix draws ad dollars from social media or TV. Traditional TV networks are about to lose one of their main arguments for charging big rates for ads. Netflix's arrival on Madison Avenue next year is going to erode the hugely lucrative TV ad business, said Levin, who spoke with Insider in September.
